Novomatic Rex Slot Review and Free Play

Rex: Demo

Based on an Austrian TV show about an Alsatian police dog, Rex is a 5 reel, 40 payline video slot from Novomatic. Doggy treats on offer here include a bonus feature that awards up to 32 free spins with a second wild brought into play and payouts of up to 25 times your stake. Play from between 40p and £100 per spin.

British viewers have been treated to many European TV shows in recent years but Inspector Rex hasn’t made the cut. Sounding like a police procedural starring The Littlest Hobo, it forms the basis for this pretty standard game from Novomatic.

The imagery here has a strong police feel – joining the lower value A to 9 playing cards are handcuffs, a pistol, a helicopter and a police car. There’s also a doggy dinner. Best of all is the German shepherd Rex. Land 2, 3, 4 or 5 of these in a payline and you’ll receive 10, 80, 200 or 1,000 coins.

Substituting for all other symbols is Rex’s paw print which is the game’s wild. Rounding out the symbols is the police siren light which is the scatter – land 3 of these on the same spin and you’ll get a payout equal to 5 times your total stake. More importantly, you’ll trigger the Free Games feature.

Here you can look forward to 16 free spins. During the free spins, the doggy dinner symbol will join Rex and become a second wild. This will be in play for the duration of the feature. You can also retrigger the feature giving you up to 32 free spins in total.

Novomatic video slots are usually simply designed but Rex is 1 of the developer’s better efforts. It’s not a stunner in terms of visuals but it all works well enough. As far as volatility goes, Rex is in the medium to high range. The base game action provides few thrills but the decent allocation of free spins complete with a second wild offers some decent bonus round possibilities.

It may not be familiar to British eyes but the decent free spins round means that Rex can deliver a decent payout bite as well as a noisy bark. Saying that, I would much rather other games based on TV shows such as Microgaming’s Game of Thrones or Ash Gaming’s Little Britain.
