Crystal Queen is a beautifully designed fairy tale-themed video slot from Quickspin. The base game action starts on a 20 payline machine but the swooping reels game engine means this can expand to offer even more paylines complete with expanding multipliers. Also on offer is a free spins bonus round played on a 56 payline reel set. Stakes range from between 10p and £100 per spin.
As usual, Quickspin has hit the mark as far as design goes – Crystal Queen looks lovely. A snowy forest forms the backdrop to the reels which include lower value A to 10 symbols alongside a reindeer, male and female youngsters and the Crystal Queen herself.
Somewhat unusually, 2 wilds are on offer here. There’s a standard wild and a spreading wild that can hit on reels 1, 2 and 3 in the base game (2, 3 and 4 in the feature) – the spreading wild can turn between 1 and 5 extra symbols wild.
The game is played using a Swooping Reels feature – after a winning spin, the successful symbols are removed from play and new ones drop in and replace them. These continue as long as a new winning combination is created. Each swoop also unlocks a frozen row and increases the number of paylines. It also awards multipliers of 2x, 3x and even 5x if you get on a really good run with the swoops.

As you’d expect given the theme, there’s a magical feel to the design here and it works very well. The imagery is beautifully detailed and the orchestral score is an ideal match. The range of features isn’t bad either. The Swooping Reels feature keeps things moving in the base game and the spreading wilds can deliver some decent results.
Your best chance to land an impressive score comes from the free spins round though. This is a medium volatility game with maximum wins of 829 times your total bet on each spin. The fairy tale theme isn’t for everyone though. If you do enjoy that genre then Crystal Queen is a pretty good effort, combining slick sound and visuals with some solid features – I also suggest Quickspin’s Rapunzel’s Tower which has been revamped.
