Playtech The X-Files Video Slot Review

The X-Files: Demo

“The truth is out there” was the tagline to the hit TV show The X-Files. Are there jackpots out there to? That’s what we’re hoping to discover in this 5 reel, 20 payline video slot from Playtech that’s based on the 1990s drama. The likeliest way to find a winner is via the wild multipliers that can combine to boost payouts by up to 25x or via the bonus round that awards up to 20 free spins with the same big multipliers. Play, on all devices, from between 20p and £500 per spin.

The X-Files was an unlikely TV hit of the 1990s and the design here has a slightly retro feel. The reels are set against a forest backdrop and include lower value A to J playing cards alongside an alien hand, a silhouette of a pair of FBI agents and a torch. The most rewarding symbols are the show’s main characters, Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson). They offer awards of 10 times your total bet for a 5 symbol combination.

Helping to create those winning combinations are the 4 multiplier wilds that spin on plain white symbols known as Rifts – these can boost payouts by 1x, 2x, 3x or 5x when they make up part of a winning line in the Multiplier Wild Symbols feature. Better still is if there’s more than 1 wild multiplier in a payline as the multipliers are combined up to 25x! These wilds replace all other symbols bar the scatter and offer awards in their own right of up to 10 times your bet per line.

The other main bonus offering here is the Locking Rift Free Games feature which is triggered by landing 3, 4 or 5 of the I Want To Believe flying saucer scatter. That will then get you 7, 10 or 20 free spins. Every time a Rift lands it will lock in place for the rest of your free spins, offering a multiplier wild on each 1 of them. Land multiples of these and the coins can quickly start to flow as a multiplier up to 25x can apply to each and every free spin.

Spooky conspiracy theories were central to the TV version of The X-Files. There’s little in the way of intrigue on offer in this video slot version though which is a pretty simple affair. The visuals have a slightly old school feel and the soundtrack is slightly sinister. Sadly, they couldn’t find room for Mark Snow’s famous theme.

We enjoyed this take on the cult TV show. The X-Files is not the most outlandish in terms of design or features but delivers enough action to make us believers. The potential 25x multipliers making this game stand out but the low value of the symbols allows for wins of only 1,000 times your bet on each spin (with the 25x multiplier).

It’s a case of what could have been if they increased the symbols values. Not to worry though – Playtech has plenty of other branded titles with Top Gun and The Matrix good options.
