Playtech The Mask of Zorro Video Slot Review

Based on the 1998 film incarnation of the masked vigilante, The Mask of Zorro is a movie-themed video slot from, who else, Playtech. It’s a 5 reel, 40 payline game that comes with high spec design and a bonus round that awards free spins and multipliers. With a wave of his sword, Zorro can also randomly add up to 10 wilds on any spin. Play on your computer, tablet or mobile from between 40p and £400 per spin.

The design here takes its cue from the 1998 movie The Mask of Zorro. Joining the lower value A to 9 symbols are 5 characters from the film. In order of value, you’ll see Captain Harris (Matt Letscher), Don Rafael (Stuart Wilson), Elena Montero (Catherine Zeta Jones) and Diego de la Vega (Sir Anthony Hopkins) who’ll get you 12.5 times bet if you land 5 on a payline.

More rewarding still is the fifth character, Zorro (Antonio Banderas) who is the game’s wild. The wild can hit on any reel and offers awards of 2.5, 12.5 or 25 times bet for a 3, 4 or 5-symbol combination. You will find 2 features on offer in this swashbuckling adventure which are as follows:

• The Mark of Zorro feature – watch out as Zorro uses his trusty sword to etch extra wilds onto the reels – randomly. A new payout is made with 4, 7 or even 10 added wilds in position.
• Secret Cave Bonus feature – land the candle holder scatter on reels 1, 3 and 5 to trigger this. You’ll start by being awarded 5 free spins at 1x. You can add to this by choosing 2 of the 6 candles. These will reveal 5 extra free spins and/or 1x multipliers.

Any multipliers are then applied once the free spins begin – you could get 2 1x multipliers giving you a 3x multiplier overall or just free spins taking your initial total to 15. The good news is that 3 scatters during a free spin will give you additional free spins, indefinitely! There’s more – The Mark of Zorro feature also applies meaning Zorro can randomly add up to 10 wilds on each free spin.

The visuals are perfectly well done and the Spanish-inflected soundtrack is a nice fit. The features are solid enough too. They’re not the most original though but they can pay up to 3,000 times your bet on each free spin if you play with a 3x multiplier.

Entertaining rainy Sunday fodder as the film is, we were surprised to see a video slot version of The Mask of Zorro. Just like the movie, this adaptation is easy on the eye and ear – however, the gameplay is much better than the actual movie itself so thumbs up to Playtech.
