Playtech is among the top developers when it comes to the design of its video slots and Call of the Valkyries is a cracker on that score. The action takes place against a snowy mountain backdrop. The reels include royal value that are done in the style of rune stones. More rewarding are the helmet, axes and shield, known collectively as the warrior symbols. All 3 of these symbols offer awards of up to 8 times your bet per payline.

They’re followed by the silver hammer which pays up to 10 times your bet. The best of the standard symbols is the hunting horn. Land 5 of these on the same payline and you’ll receive 20 times your bet. The window is the wild. It replaces everything bar the scatter. Playtech has packed a decent range of extras into Call of the Valkyries.

Touch of the Valkyries feature – a bolt of lightning can strike following any winless spin. This strike can turn 1 (or more) of the 3 warrior symbols into a wild. A new payout calculation is then made with the wilds in place.

March of the Valkyries feature – land a stacked wild on reels 1 and/or 5 to trigger this extra. You’ll then receive a series of respins where the Valkyrie wild (or wilds) will move across the screen to the opposite side 1 reel at a time.  Warrior symbols turn into frozen wilds if they fall in the path of the Valkyrie wilds. All payouts receive a 2x multiplier boost if 2 stacked wilds land on the same reel.

Call of the Valkyries feature – the third feature becomes active if you hit the scatter on reels 1, 3 and 5 on the same spin. It’s a classic pick me round where you have to select objects dropped by fallen Norse warriors. Each successful pick awards a cash prize. Find a demon though and you’ll lose a life. If you progress through the levels and reach the gate of Valhalla, then all your winning from this round are doubled.

This take on the increasingly popular Norse theme is an impressive one. There’s an epic sweep to the sound and visuals and that’s matches by a good range of features. The lack of a traditional Free Games feature might put some players off – we don’t think it should though as the other extras make up for that rather nicely.

The bigger wins will come in the March of the Valkyries feature especially if you trigger it with 2 stacked Valkyrie wilds and get plenty of frozen wilds. If you like your video slots to have the feel of a sweeping saga then Call of the Valkyries delivers just that.
