NextGen Gaming Valhalla Video Slot Review

Valhalla: Demo

The mighty hall where Norse warriors see out their afterlife is the setting for Valhalla, a 5 reel, 10 payline video slot from NextGen Gaming (in partnership with Bet Digital). Featuring strong, Viking-style design, it comes with the special Valhalla Spins feature where you can increase your stakes and in return receive expanding wilds, re-spins and multiplier extras. Join Odin and co. from 10p per spin.

The design in Valhalla is rather nicely done – the reels are set against a parchment style backdrop and include lower value playing cards as well as Viking helmet and horn which award up to 40 times your stake and axes and shield which pay up to 50 times your stake. The Viking longship is the most rewarding symbol. Land 3, 4 or 5 of these and you’ll win 10, 50 or 250 times your bet.

Appearing on reel 3 only, the blonde-haired Norse woman is the game’s wild – she substitutes for all other symbols. So far so standard. You can spice up your action by paying extra and activating the Valhalla Spins feature. The bigger your stakes per spin, the more extras are awarded:

  • Level 1 (2x your normal bet) – wilds on reel 3 turn into expanding wilds
  • Level 2 (4x your normal bet) – wilds on reel 3 turn into expanding wilds and a re-spin is awarded
  • Level 3 (6x your normal bet) – wilds on reel 3 turn into expanding wilds and 2 re-spins are awarded
  • Level 4 (8x your normal bet) – wilds on reel 3 turn into expanding wilds and 3 re-spins are awarded
  • Level 5 (10x your normal bet) – wilds on reel 3 turn into expanding wilds and 4 re-spins are awarded complete with expanding multiplier. 1x on your first win, 2x on your second, 3x on your 3rd and 4x on your fourth.

The design in Valhalla is very well done – the imagery is super sharp and extremely detailed. You’ll hear the clanging of swords on each spin as well as Wagner’s ‘Ride of the Valkyries’ during the re-spins. The base game action is pretty pedestrian if you play in standard more.

Opting to play with the Valhalla spins active certainly perks up the action but it’s not cheap. It all depends on what funds you have available so some careful bankroll is recommended. This Viking longship can sail into some choppy waters so take care.

If you do have the funds and patience to manage the swings, there’s some solid action on offer here. If you enjoy the historic, Viking theme then a virtual trip to Microgaming’s Thunderstruck II and WMS’ Viking Vanguard are highly recommended.
