Bubbling up a bumper jackpot is the name of the game in Spellcast, a magic-themed video slot from NetEnt. Played using a 5 reel, 20 payline game, this simple yet fiery game comes with wilds that double payouts and a free spins feature where all wins are trebled. Play on your desktop, tablet or mobile from between 20p and £40 per spin.
We were a bit underwhelmed when we first fired up Spellcast. The design is a little disappointing for a NetEnt game but it was produced in 2006! The reels feature gold A to 10 values alongside a range of magic-themed objects. You’ll see magic wands and a book of spells spinning around the reels. Both of these offer awards of up to 250 coins per payline. They’re joined by a bottle of potion and the witch at her cauldron which pay up to 500x.
Most rewarding of the standard symbols is the castle, complete with the witch on her broomstick, which pays up to 750 coins per line. Potentially far more rewarding is the bearded wizard who is the game’s wild. Land 2, 3, 4 or 5 of these in combination and you’ll pocket a bumper reward of 10, 250, 2,500 or 10,000 coins – 10,000 coins is 500 times your bet! Magically, if the wizard wild is part of a winning combination of standard symbols, then that payout is doubled.
Landing 3 or more crystal ball scatters can be a lucrative proposition too. As well as an award of 5, 25 or 500 times your total stake, you’ll also trigger the Free Spins feature. On offer here are 15 free spins – spicing up this round is a 3x multiplier which is applied to all winning combinations, trebling the payout. You can also play the feature again (by getting 3 or more scatters) to give you 30 free spins altogether.
Spellcast is a very simple game, both in the way it looks and the way it plays. The cartoon visuals aren’t that impressive but do the job. What makes this volatile game playable are the multipliers, especially in the free spins round where the 3x boost can quickly get the coins flowing – this can lead to wins of nearly 1,800 times your bet on each free spin.
There’s nothing on offer in Spellcast that we haven’t seen in many other video slots. Original it ain’t but it’s a classic. If you fancy some simple, high variance action then Spellcast can deliver just that. If you want something more modern with plenty of bonus features and high-quality graphics/animations, Planet of the Apes and Asgardian Stones (by NetEnt) are worth considering.
