Go on a voyage of exploration in The Discovery, a seafaring adventure from Playtech. Played using a 5 reel, 25 payline engine, this historically-themed video slot comes with stacked wilds and a free spins feature where all payouts are boosted by a 3x multiplier and trebled. The Discovery appears to be loosely based on Captain Cook and his voyages around the Pacific Ocean – the reels are set against the ocean and overlooked by the mountains of a mysterious Polynesian island.

As usual with Playtech, playing cards make up the lower value symbols in The Discovery. The 9 and 10 award up to 100 coins, the J and Q up to 150 and the K and A up to 200. More in keeping with the exploration theme are the white flower and the telescope. 5 of these on a payline will see you pocket 500 coins.

You’ll only need to land 2 of the final pair of symbols to create a winning line. The mountain scene awards 2, 30, 100 or 1,000 coins. Most lucrative of all is the Polynesian woman. Land a 5-in-a-row combination for a payout of 5,000 coins. The game’s wild is the ship’s compass – this can land fully stacked on the middle 3 reels. As usual, it substitutes for everything apart from the scatter.

The Discovery comes with a Free Games feature – to trigger it, you’ll need to land 3 or more of the ship’s captain. As well as a 5, 10 or 100x payout, you’ll also be awarded 10 free spins. That may not sound like many but all payouts in the feature benefit from a 3x multiplier and are trebled. 3 or more scatters here triggers another round of 10 free spins – there’s no limit to how many free spins you can win!

This isn’t 1 of Playtech’s more complex efforts as the visuals have a slightly primitive feel. The same could be said of the gameplay. The stacked wilds certainly help move things along in the base game. Combine them with the trebling multiplier in the feature round and some impressive results are possible. The free spins weren’t the easiest to trigger but offer plenty of potential.

The Discovery is a simple but entertaining video slot. Get lucky with those multipliers in the bonus feature and you could be sailing away with plenty of bounty. Saying that, I prefer other games which are set at sea with Red Lady by Novomatic and Viking Vanguard by WMS good choices.
